NYARTMAN - Gotham's Inkslinging Superhero

Jeremy Garrett is NYARTMAN.  Licensed tattoo artist, Garrett has been tattooing professionally for over two decades. He is a commercial artist born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the first student at Memphis's Central High School to receive six gold medals from the nationally renowned Scholastic Art Awards.  Garrett received a scholarship and graduated from one of the country’s most acclaimed institutions, The School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1994. While in college, he started tattooing underground, since tattooing was not legalized until 1997. After graduation, Garrett operated his own commercial and fine art studio, Black Work Studio located in New York City's East Village.

Although he is trained as a classical fine artist, Garrett’s style lends itself to a unique mix of urban grunge and comic book art with a touch of post-surrealistic pop.  His work has continued to help define that which is American underground art.  Affluent collectors and top executives from Fortune 500 companies such as FedEx, ABC and members of the Grand Lodge of New York’s Masonic Order are only a few who enjoy his diversity as an artist.  As an accomplished graphic designer, he has worked with clients such as Kodak, Ralph Loren, Johnson & Johnson, Lockheed Martin and ABC News. His illustrations and graphic design work has also been featured in publications throughout the country.  He has been recognized in the internationally acclaimed Japanese GQ as one of New York City's premier tattoo artists and was most recently interviewed in the Fox News Magazine.

2000-2006 he taught commercial art at the now defunct High School of Graphic Communication Arts which was one of New York City’s leading commercial art public high schools. Garrett's work has been shown in galleries in New York City and in Jerusalem. In 2007, he won a national artist grant and was recognized by the Israeli government as one of today's cutting edge artists; however, it's the streets of New York City that continue to be the true source of Garrett's passion.  She has encouraged his long sultry love affair with the tattooing profession and he is grateful to be one of her creative representatives. From this union he has beaten the odds and has risen to become Gotham's Inkslinging Superhero you know and love.

Modern comic book artists are his main source of inspiration.  Joe Madureira, David Finch, Kent Williams and Todd McFarlane top his list.  He currently focuses his artistic attentions on helping define underground art in America.  He is recognized internationally as being one of the most highly skilled cover up tattoo artists which, is generally considered the most difficult form of tattooing.  Garrett's now tattooing in Seattle, Washington.  You can find out more about NYARTMAN by visiting his website at www.nyartman.com.
